Activity 18-05-12 – Short story – Claire Keegan and Frank O’Connor

1.     Describe the two main characters in “Antarctica”. How are they described physically and psychologicallyby the author? Are they flat or round characters (Candido)?
2.                What is the relationship between the presents Helen buys for her son, daughter and husband and the rest of the story?
3.             How is the environment and setting of Antarctica? What do they suggest right from the beginning ofthe story?
4.              What are the elements that give unity to the short story “Antarctica”?
5.             How is the structure of Antarctica? Comic or Tragic? Explain why and select the moment the peripetia is triggered?
6.     Describe the three main characters in “My Oedipus”. How are they described physically and psychologically by the author? Are they flat or round characters (Candido)?
7.               What is the relationship between Larry and his mother in the beginning of the story?
8.               What happens when Larry’s father come back from war? How many disruptions are described in the story before the declaration of war between father and son?
9.               What is the element that changes the whole scenario in the short story? How are the three characters changed by it?

1.      What is the relationship between popular fiction and Walt Whitman’s use of images in his poems?
2.      How is The United States described in the poem “I hear America Singing”. Make a connection between the form of the poem (number lines, poetic syllables and rhymes) with concepts such as “freedom” and “equality”.
3.      What is the historical event that inspired Walt Whitman to write “A Boston Ballad” (Rayonld’s text)? What are the elements of the poem that are typical of a ballad and which are not?
4.      How is homosexuality described in the poem “We Two boys together clinging”?
5.      What is the theme of “To a Locomotive in Winter”? Explain what the meter of the poem suggests.
6.      What is the main formal difference between Emily Dickinson’s and Walt Whitman’s verse?
7.      What is the meter that inspires Emily Dickinson? Where does it come from?
8.      What is the main rhyme pattern of Dickinson’s verse? Select one of the poems studied in class and show how it is developed.
9.      How is the theme of religion present in Dickinson’s verse?
10.  Compare and contrast “I am nobody” by Dickinson with the first section of “Song of Myself” by Whitman. What are the similarities and differences?
